Spiro-stasis - Spiritual Balance - The Key to Aging Well
"There is a God shaped vacuum in the heart of every man which cannot be filled by any created thing, but only by God, the Creator..." Blaise Pascal
After speaking with thousands of people over the years, I have observed a pattern: an overactive and stressed-out personality ages faster, gets sick more frequently and has a higher incidence of chronic disease than other personality types.
Conversely, I have observed that people who are deeply connected to the Spirit part of themselves have the least incidence of illness and chronic disease. For these people, the aging process becomes much more than just bio-stasis (balancing the body), it embraces spiro-stasis, which literally means, soul balance.
We cannot deny our spiritual condition any more than we can deny our biological condition. This is because an unrest soul will sabotage the body just as an unrest body will sabotage the soul.
It is undeniable; stored anger, repressed emotion, and chronic stress eventually take their toll on the body and ultimately shorten the life span. Hans Selye, who won a Nobel Prize for his work on stress, commented on how we are engineered for acute stress (fight or flight), but quickly break down under chronic stress. In fact, I see chronic stress as the #1 malady afflicting our clients, usually resulting in adrenal failure, autoimmune disorders such as fibromyalgia, lupus, multiple sclerosis, and many other issues.
So, what can be done? We must practice the balance of living from our heart and soul along with our ego and mind. The powerful saying, The mind is a terrible master and a loyal servant, means that no one is engineered to be the general manager of the universe and suggests that we trust and defer to God for that level of management.
The men and women I know who truly embrace spiro-stasis appear to have Love, abundance, acceptance and grace and the miracles of these qualities follow them everywhere they go. It is a beautiful manifestation of balance.
One of my spiritual mentors, of 25 years, Dr Rick Warren, said, "One day my heart is going to stop, and that will be the end of my body - but not the end of me." Think about it: arent we simply Spirits having a human experience? Then shouldnt we choose to live and think like this? If we choose to embrace this concept, our values will change accordingly and we will love as if we are going to live forever. I'll leave you with that for now.
